Understanding our world. Beach School (Group 2)

After asking for weeks to visit the local ice cream shop, the wait was finally over and the children were very excited! The locals in the café commented on the children's beautiful manners and they were a real credit to our school. Some of the children counted out the money to pay the lady, double checking, to make sure they had counted correctly. Megan noticed a map of the coastline at the café and said that we have a book about maps back at school that we could look at to try and find our beach.

"The coins are different. Golden and silver ones." Gracie

 "...11,12,13. 13 altogether." Phoebe
"Yes, that's right. 13." Gracie

"Why does the beach never look the same?" Gracie

The weather at the beach was surprisingly warmer than it has been recently and some of the children started to associate the changes in weather having an effect on the sea. This was a topic of discussion back in our Beach Hut.

"The weather pulls and pushes the sea in and out. Today wasn't windy so the sea was relaxed." Megan

"On dark days when it's rainy and windy. The sea is fierce and wild like a dinosaur." Ethan I

"It was quiet today but loud last time." Edie

"I think the sea likes the sun. When the sun shines the sea is happy." Marley

"When there's no sun, it's angry!" Geoffrey

"On a high tide, we don't see much beach." Gracie

"When it's low tide that means the sea is out and we can see the rock pools." Ethan I

"Today was in the middle." Emma

"We could see a little bit of rocks but not all of them." Amy

"If we come back later you might see all the rocks." Phoebe

"Or it might come back in again?" Ethan I

"Look, I've wrote my name!" Gracie

"There is something over there, in the water. I think it is a jellyfish."- Geoffrey

Back at the Beach Hut we looked at maps to find our beach. The children were amazed by Google Earth, where we could even zoom in to take a closer look. The children also wanted to look at the globe and talked about the different places that they have visited on holiday.

"I live in England and my family live in China."
"Our steps... the 82 steps. I see them!"

We also made some fantastic sea glass art.

Thank you again to our wonderful volunteers who join us each week.
It is a real pleasure to observe and support the children understanding their world.
