We Will Remember. Beach School (Group 1)

Today we explored our locality further and visited the statue of 'Tommy' the soldier.
We were able to see the  resin poppies that have been created to remember Seaham's servicemen and women whose lives were claimed by war.

Back at school the children continued to talk about Tommy.
In our Beach Hut, the children shared their thoughts and ideas of what Tommy is and why he is there.

"Why is he a statue when he used to be alive?" Reuben

"No, when I seen him in my book he not alive. He doesn't move." Ben

"Protects us." Aaron

"Protects the floor and the sky. He protects Jesus." Fred

"Jesus is in heaven." Ben

"There was a war. World War One and World War Two." Aaron

"What's a war?" Ben

"A war is a big fight between lots of soldiers and knights. Baddies and goodies." Reuben

"My granddad a goodie. He went to heaven. He was in the war." Aaron

"Tommy helped us by defeating the bad guys." Robyn

"Tommy means that he looked after Sunderland and our country." Alice

"The soldiers keeped us safe." Isabella

We spent time looking at photographs and finding the answers to some of our questions.
We talked about the word REMEMBER, which we had noticed lots of times throughout our day. We spoke about the importance of remembering our soldiers, both past and present.

"If Reverend Suzie was here today, right now, we could put the quiet song on and lay down and think of Tommy. Could we do that now?" Alice

We stopped what we were doing and went to the library to listen to The Lord's Prayer, as requested by Alice, and the children had some time to be quiet, think and reflect. It was very powerful and moving, to see that Tommy had had such an impact on the children.

Thank you again to our volunteers, who help and support our Beach School, the opportunities and experiences that the children are gaining are priceless!
